This week's interview will be with Stas Dmytriiev from Sungift Games.
First, please take a moment to introduce yourself and Sungift Games.
Hi, I'm Stas Dmytriiev, Creative Director at Sungift Games.
What is your role at the Sungift Games
In 2009, I with my friend Andriy Pertsov founded Sungift Games, as we found ourselves strong enough to make games we want. We got credit and started to work. I was responsible for programming, but was involved in almost every game production stage (game-design, story, audio etc.)
What is the size of the Sungift Games and would you want to introduce others?
We are small - we have four artists, two programmers and game designer. But only three of us are working full time.
What is the Idea of the Sungift Games's business (self publishing, services, etc)?
We want to be independent and develop small, but fun games for casual (but not only) auditory.
What platforms do you develop for?
Our first game (Forgotten Places : Lost Circus) was released for PC and Mac, and recently (thanks to Corona SDK) we port it to iOS. Also we plan to get into Android.
How many Apps have Sungift Games published
Currently we have only Forgotten Place: Lost Circus published for PC/Mac/iOS.
What was your flagship app that you think brought Sungift Games to the limelight?
Forgotten Place: Lost Circus
Which is your favourite app amongst all your apps?
Forgotten Place: Lost Circus :), but we are working on other games that will be not worse and not less favourite.
What is your favourite app that you have not created?
Maybe my favourite game : DeusEx.
What is your favourite device (Computer & Phone) and why?
I like iPod Touch I have, and even more that iPad (which undoubtedly great device) due to its size. It's more convenient to travel with iPod, than with iPad (sometimes size does matter).
Can you tell us a little bit more about Forgotten Place: Lost Circus?
We released Lost Circus for PC/Mac in November 2010, and almost right away started to working on mobile version. After some researches for engines for mobile devices we found Corona SDK and it seemed the most right tool for porting of the game. We had working prototype in about a month, but it takes two months more to get the game be same as on PC/Mac. As there where technical difficulties due to hardware limits of iPad comparing to personal computers (memory, performance, controls). Also we had some glitches caused by Corona SDK and which were fixed only in last stable release of this SDK. But anyhow Forgotten Places : Lost Circus HD was shipped for iPad in April 2011.
What was the inspiration for the app?
The main idea was that Hidden Object games quite popular and we found that "circus" setting almost wasn't used in such games.
What are the main categories your apps are in? (Games/Utilities/etc)
Games
Do you advertise for any apps you have published? What was the outcome/results?
Yes, we made investments in advertising, but itís hard to estimate its influence, as same time we were chose by Apple as one of New & Noteworthy for iPad apps.
When did you start development?
Professionally in 2002, as hobby in 1992.
How did you get into Development? What attracted you to this?
I started with programming for Yamaha MSX II and was always passionate about game developing, since I learnt to programming. After graduate from University, I looked for job in game industry, but this wish fulfilled only in 2002 when I found work as script programmer in Action Forms Ltd to work on first-person shooter Vivisector: Beast Within.
What is your favourite programming language?
I like languages I am currently working with: C++ and Lua.
Do you believe in the giving back code to the society to help aid development
Sure, but sometimes it's more helpful to give somebody only an idea, as implementation in code very depends on certain app.
Do you have any GitHub repositories or OpenSource or code repos?
No.
What do you do other than Development?
I'm a cinemaddict, so spent a lot of my time with movies, trailers etc., but also like to travel.
What is your method of commute? (Bike, Train, Car, Walk)
I have motorcycle.
So what is next in the pipeline for Sungift Games
We are going to port Lost Circus to Android platform. Also we have another Adventure/Hidden Object game in production and some smaller games in preproduction, but going to ship them this year.
What advice would you give to other developers out there?
Do what you like the most. Be open-minded to new ideas, but keep your mind sharp to not get lost in minutiae.
Would you want to provide your contact details if any one would want to get in touch with Sungift Games
Look forward to our new games at @sungiftgames, and I always reachable at email: stas (at) sungiftgames.com
Thank you for your time, we appreciate your participation
